A Safer Home for Pet Birds and Their Sensitive Airways

Birds share the air in your home, and cooking smoke, aerosols and strong fumes can create risks. Keep a bird鈥檚 enclosure away from kitchens and smoke, ventilate rooms when using household products, and follow product labels carefully. Never assume a product is safe just because it is safe around people.

Build a bird-aware routine

Before using a cleaner, fragrance or renovation material, ask an avian veterinarian whether it is appropriate around your bird. Keep windows and doors secure during out-of-cage time, and make sure fans and hot cookware are inaccessible.

Birds can hide signs of illness. A change in breathing, posture, appetite or droppings should prompt a call to an avian veterinarian. For a suspected fume exposure, move the bird away from the source and contact a veterinarian urgently.
