Your dog’s name should mean “check in with me,” not “you are in trouble.” In a quiet room, say the name once in a friendly voice. When your dog looks toward you, mark the moment with praise and offer a small reward.
Practice before you need it
Repeat for a few brief sessions, then try in slightly more interesting places. Reward the response generously when distractions are greater. If your dog does not turn, make the exercise easier by moving closer or choosing a quieter spot rather than repeating the name louder.
Keep the skill positive and never use it to lure your dog into something frightening. For safety around roads or other hazards, use a secure leash while you build attention and ask a qualified reward-based trainer for support if needed.
