Small Comfort Changes for an Older Dog

As dogs age, familiar rooms can become harder to navigate. Add non-slip runners on smooth floors, keep water easy to reach, and offer a supportive bed away from drafts. A low step or ramp may help with favorite resting places, but introduce it slowly and supervise until your dog is confident.

Keep routines flexible

Shorter, gentler walks with plenty of sniffing may suit an older dog better than a single demanding outing. Keep nails at a comfortable length and check paws regularly, since traction matters on slippery surfaces.

Do not assume slowing down is just age. New stiffness, reluctance to jump, changes in sleep or difficulty rising are worth discussing with your veterinarian. A checkup can identify pain and help tailor exercise and home changes.
