Hot-Weather Walks for Dogs in the City

Warm, humid weather can make exercise harder for dogs. Choose cooler parts of the day, stay on shaded routes and bring water. Keep walks relaxed, and give your dog the option to turn back rather than pushing through a planned distance.

Watch closely and plan ahead

Hot pavement can be uncomfortable, so choose grass or shaded paths when possible. Never leave a dog alone in a parked car. Bring a phone and know how to contact a veterinary clinic if your dog becomes unwell.

Heavy or unusual panting, weakness, vomiting, confusion or collapse can be an emergency. Move your dog to a cooler place and contact a veterinarian immediately for instructions. Do not wait to see whether serious symptoms pass.
