Dental care is easiest to maintain when it becomes a calm routine. Begin by letting your pet sniff the brush and reward relaxed behavior. Over several sessions, gently touch the outside of the lips, then a tooth, and stop while your pet is still comfortable.
Use pet-safe supplies
Choose a soft pet toothbrush and toothpaste made for animals. Human toothpaste is not intended to be swallowed by pets. If brushing causes distress, pause and ask your veterinarian about other home-care options.
Bad breath, red gums, drooling, dropping food or chewing on one side can signal oral pain. Brushing cannot replace a veterinary dental exam or professional cleaning when needed, so arrange a check if you notice a change.
