Choose a quiet, easy-to-reach place where your cat will not be surprised by a door, appliance or passing pet. Keep the tray away from food and water, and make sure a kitten, older cat or cat with mobility trouble can get in comfortably.
Keep it familiar and clean
Scoop regularly and wash the tray with a mild, unscented cleaner. Strong fragrances may put some cats off. If you have more than one cat, add litter access in separate locations so a confident cat cannot block the route to every tray.
Do not treat a new accident as misbehavior. Changes in urination or defecation can signal a health problem, so contact your veterinarian promptly if your cat strains, cries, produces very little urine or repeatedly avoids the tray.
